Tesla’s unboxed manufacturing proposal put assembly economics in focus

At its March 2023 Investor Day, Tesla described assembling major vehicle sections separately before joining them. The proposal became known as the unboxed manufacturing approach.
Collective perspective
The fleet relevance is indirect but substantial: a simpler production process could influence the price and availability of the vehicles a fleet needs. It would not, by itself, establish what an outside buyer pays or how quickly repairs can be completed.
Our assessment would separate factory efficiency from serviceability. A design that is efficient to assemble may still require specialist parts, tools or repair procedures. Fleet economics should account for the cost of keeping the asset available over its life, rather than treating an anticipated manufacturing saving as an equal improvement in owner returns.
