Tesla’s Q1 2024 disclosure linked its purpose-built robotaxi to its planned unboxed manufacturing approach.

Collective perspective

Bringing product design and production design together could make a specialized fleet vehicle easier to scale. The key word for an outside owner is could: manufacturing intent is upstream of supply availability, transaction pricing and service support.

The collective’s planning lens is total lifecycle cost. Purchase price, repair time, parts availability and useful operating life belong in the same assessment. A low factory cost target should not become a fixed acquisition-price assumption before buyer terms exist. This milestone connected two development programs; it did not settle the cost of owning and operating their eventual output.
