Tesla began describing a dedicated robotaxi in 2022

Purpose-built design changes the planning problem.

Archive coverage: the date above identifies the historical event, announcement or report. Analysis is written with hindsight; earlier targets are not current commitments.

At its April 2022 Texas event, Tesla described plans for a dedicated robotaxi.

Collective perspective

Purpose-built design changes the planning problem. A conventional car must accommodate a human driver and a wide range of personal uses. A vehicle designed around passenger service can instead prioritize boarding, cleaning, durability and time available for rides.

That focus could be attractive to a future fleet owner, but specialization has a tradeoff. A vehicle optimized for one service may have fewer alternative uses if that service is delayed or restricted. We would therefore evaluate a dedicated robotaxi through both operating efficiency and downside flexibility. The announcement mattered because it pointed toward a different asset, not because it established a purchasable fleet product.
