A 2024 production target put Tesla’s dedicated robotaxi on a timetable

Removing controls makes the vehicle’s usefulness depend more directly on autonomous operation.

Archive coverage: the date above identifies the historical event, announcement or report. Analysis is written with hindsight; earlier targets are not current commitments.

In April 2022, Tesla targeted robotaxi production in 2024, without conventional driver controls.

Collective perspective

Removing controls makes the vehicle’s usefulness depend more directly on autonomous operation. It also means manufacturing readiness and permission to operate have to meet before the asset can deliver its intended service. Progress on only one side does not complete the business case.

For Cybercab Collective, the historical target illustrates why a launch schedule should be a scenario input rather than a promise. Funding, storage, support arrangements and commercial commitments should be timed around verified availability. A lower projected vehicle cost would not compensate automatically for a long period in which the vehicle could not earn revenue.
