Tesla began a limited Full Self-Driving Beta rollout in October 2020. Selected owners could use the developing system under driver supervision; this was not a public driverless taxi service.
Collective perspective
A consumer software release and a fleet operating launch answer different questions. The former concerns what a driver can use in an owned vehicle. The latter requires a complete passenger service, including responsibility for the trip when nobody is driving from the front seat.
This distinction protects a fleet model from a common category error: removing driver costs simply because a product carries an ambitious name. Our analysis would need to reflect the actual operating conditions, staffing and intervention requirements for the specific service. Software progress matters, but the conditions attached to its use matter just as much.
