Cybercab, Robotaxi and FSD: three names, three different questions

Cybercab names a purpose-built vehicle. Robotaxi refers to Tesla’s passenger service. FSD (Supervised) is a consumer driving-assistance product that requires active driver supervision. They are connected, but they are not interchangeable.

Start with what is being described

When a story says a robotaxi market opened, ask which vehicle served the trips and under what conditions. A Model Y operating in a service does not become a Cybercab. When a software update is announced, ask whether it changes a consumer feature or the separate fleet service.

Tesla’s own support material states that FSD (Supervised) does not make the vehicle autonomous. That requirement cannot be removed from a business model because a related service uses different software or operating arrangements.

Why the distinction matters for a fleet

The vehicle determines practical questions such as passenger fit and support requirements. The service determines dispatch, customer access and commercial conditions. The software and its permitted use determine what supervision and intervention are required. A fleet plan needs all three layers to agree.

Collective perspective

For Cybercab Collective, this means that owning a Tesla would not by itself establish eligibility to provide unattended passenger rides. We would need a supported operating arrangement with defined terms. Progress at one layer is worth following, while unresolved dependencies at the others remain visible.

When reading a headline, try completing this sentence: this particular vehicle can provide this particular service, in this location, under these conditions. If the evidence cannot complete it, the headline is not yet a fleet-readiness statement.
