Safety driver, safety monitor and rider-only: reading the labels

A safety driver occupies the driving position and can use the vehicle’s controls. A safety monitor may sit elsewhere in the vehicle as part of the service’s oversight arrangement. Rider-only describes a trip without an in-car operator or monitor.

A seat does not describe the whole system

The January 2026 Austin record described a gradual move to trips without in-car monitors, within a mixed fleet. That distinction matters: one qualifying trip does not establish that every vehicle, route or operating hour uses the same mode.

Nor does the absence of a person in the cabin prove the absence of remote assistance or on-site support. Conversely, a nearby support vehicle does not establish that someone is remotely steering the robotaxi. Those are separate technical claims that require evidence.

Collective perspective

For operating analysis, we would map the tasks rather than count only the occupied seats. Passenger assistance, vehicle recovery, cleaning, maintenance and incident review all need an accountable process. Some work may be shared across vehicles; some may require someone physically present.

The relevant questions are how often support is needed, how quickly it can respond and who pays for it. Removing an in-car role could change costs substantially, but it is not a reason to set every support expense to zero.

Careful labels help readers understand progress without claiming more than the evidence shows. They also make comparisons between markets and periods more useful.
