Pony.ai’s Doha Update Shows Why Driverless Demonstrations and Paid Service Need Separate Labels

Pony.ai and Mowasalat, known as Karwa, reported progress with their Doha robotaxi operation on September 9 at Qatar’s Autonomous e-Mobility Forum. Their update describes paid journeys through the Karwa app and a separate demonstration of vehicles operating without an onboard safety operator.

The company says its commercial pilot began in December 2025 with trained safety operators onboard, following public-road testing. The service covers locations in Old Doha and West Bay and includes an airport connection. At the forum, Pony.ai demonstrated its Gen-7 vehicles in a driverless configuration.

These are different milestones. The update does not establish that ordinary paid rides across the commercial service have switched to the same arrangement shown in the demonstration. A broader move toward fully driverless operation remains dependent on the relevant authorities.

Doha illustrates how an autonomous-vehicle company can work with an established local transport operator. The technology, passenger access and daily fleet support need to fit together for a service to work.

Someone considering one or two cars needs to understand staffing, maintenance and responsibility for interruptions. Planned partial ownership would require those obligations to be defined just as clearly.

A demonstration can justify further investigation, but operating-cost assumptions should reflect the commercial service’s actual conditions. Comparing the two carefully helps us prepare a model that can change as permissions and support requirements develop.
