Autonomy Day 2019 made the network promise explicit

The appeal of a network is that software could coordinate many assets as one service.

At Autonomy Day, Tesla forecast a robotaxi network for 2020. That forecast was not a service launch.

Collective perspective

The appeal of a network is that software could coordinate many assets as one service. For a collective, that creates a possible distinction between owning vehicles and operating the platform that finds their passengers. The distinction also introduces dependence on someone else’s pricing, dispatch and eligibility rules.

We read the milestone as an early articulation of a model, not evidence that its proposed economics were available to owners. When a business depends on a future platform, readiness should be measured through operating access and written terms. Calendar targets can guide a watchlist, but should not trigger an assumption that revenue begins on a particular date.
