Tesla’s Bay Area ride-hailing launch retained a human driver

Tesla started Bay Area ride-hailing in July 2025 with a human driver. It should be distinguished from an unsupervised robotaxi operation.
Collective perspective
A supervised service can still teach an operator about demand, dispatch and passenger expectations. Its cost structure and permissions, however, are different from those of a service that does not require a driver in the vehicle.
For a prospective collective, the Bay Area is therefore a market to evaluate on its own terms. Interest from residents is useful evidence of potential demand, but it does not establish the economics of a future driverless fleet. Our market labels should reflect those differences and remain open to revision as operator-specific permissions and service conditions change.
